Course Overview
The training provides a comprehensive introduction to asbestos management.
By the end of the course, delegates will be able to:
1. Understand the Nature and Properties of Asbestos
- Identify the different types of asbestos (chrysotile, amosite, crocidolite, etc.).
- Understand why asbestos was widely used and its physical and chemical properties.
2. Recognise Asbestos-Containing Materials (ACMs)
- Identify common ACMs and where they are likely to be found (e.g., insulation, AIB, roofing sheets, textured coatings, cement products).
- Understand the condition related risks and fibre release potential of different materials.
3. Understand the Health Risks Associated with Asbestos Exposure
- Learn about diseases such as asbestosis, lung cancer, mesothelioma, and pleural conditions.
- Understand dose, latency periods, and factors that increase risk (including smoking).
4. Follow Safe Practices to Avoid Disturbing Asbestos
- Know what to do before starting work in buildings where asbestos is present or suspected.
- Learn how to stop work safely and seek professional advice when encountering suspect materials.
- Understand emergency procedures in the event of accidental disturbance.
5. Understand the Legal Framework
- Gain awareness of key legislation including:
- Health & Safety at Work etc. Act 1974
- Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999
- Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 (CAR 2012)
- Understand duty-holder responsibilities, asbestos surveys, registers, and management plans.
